This is the fourth of seven tradeskill related quests to produce an item that improves in quality at each step and is a good, in-era item.
This quest line is also a pre-requisite for The Artisan's Prize as of 2016.
You must have completed Not So Simple Jewelry, Clay Within the Beast and Food for the Injured in order to request this task.
The quest line is given by Eron Nurwistle in Dragonscale Hills. He’s located at 794, -568, 183 – at the top of a windmill near the middle of the zone.
He is on find, but mysterious forces may prevent you from getting a path.
You must have a minimum skill of 250 in Smithing to receive this task.
At the end of Food for the Injured:
Eron Nurwistle says 'Yes, that is the reconfiguration. I hope it was not too difficult. For your next task, I would like to send you to fortress [mechanotus].'
You say, 'Mechanotus?'
Eron Nurwistle says 'It is difficult to say what Meldrath's greatest achievement is, but the Fortress Mechanotus is probably amongst the greatest. A complete island that might as well be one gargantuan clockwork that dwarfs the guardian. But that is enough about how brilliant he is, what we are more concerned with is how we can hurt him while achieving my goal of completing the necklace we are working on. If you are an expert [smith], I will send you on your next task. Additionally you will need to be more experienced than on the previous tasks I have sent you on as the areas I am sending you in are much more dangerous.'
You say, 'I am a smith'
You have been assigned the task 'Scrap Oil'.
You receive Eron's Reconfiguring Steel, a scribable scroll.
Open and scribe Eron’s Reconfiguring Steel.
Eron Nurwistle says 'For the next step we will be making a tertiary set of settings for the jewelry. You will need to find some magnetized metal that amazingly enough can only be found in scrap yard of the fortress. Additionally you will need some oil to lubricate the setting. This oil will actually be sealed within the joints, so it I (sic) a rather difficult process. You have to heat just enough to make the metal malleable, but not so much that the oil catches flame. As usually (sic) I have given you a book with the recipes you need. Once you have shown me the parts, I will give you the mold that you need.'
Head to Fortress Mechanotus. The Magnetized Scrap Metal and gem grade faycite crystals drop in the North West area. You must first go to the top level using the elevators at the center of the building (up all three floors), then run around to the left all the way around until you come to the elevators that will take you back down to the ground floor. This is the area with the recyclers. Once you’ve cleared here, take the elevators back up to the top floor and run all the way around to the other side, the far North East side of the zone. Take the elevators down to the ground floor. This is where the oil should drop.
